upma recipe-How did you make this | Upma Recipe in 4 Steps.

Upma is a popular South Indian breakfast dish made from semolina (also called sooji or rava) and various vegetables and spices. It's a healthy and filling meal that's easy to prepare and tastes delicious. In this recipe, I'll show you how to make upma that's perfect for two servings.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup semolina (rava)
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1 medium-sized tomato, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves

Instructions:

Heat a pan over medium heat and dry roast the semolina for about 3-4 minutes or until it turns light brown. Keep stirring it constantly to avoid burning. Once done, transfer it to a separate bowl and keep it aside.

In the same pan, heat the oil or ghee. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal and chana dal. Let it explode for some time.

Add the finely chopped onion, green chillies and grated ginger. Sauté until the onion turns translucent.

Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for 2-3 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.

Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.

Pour 2 cups of water into the pan and bring it to a boil.

Once the water comes to a boil, slowly add the roasted semolina while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.

Reduce the heat to low and cover the pan with a lid. Let it cook for about 5-7 minutes or until the upma is cooked and the water has been absorbed completely.

Turn off the heat and add lemon juice and chopped coriander leaves. Mix well.

Serve the upma hot with coconut chutney or any other chutney of your choice.

Tips:

You can add various vegetables such as carrots, peas, beans, etc. To make upma more nutritious or tastier.

Roasting the semolina is an important step as it gives a nutty flavor and prevents the upma from becoming lumpy.

Adjust the quantity of water according to the consistency you need. If you want a softer upma, you can add more water.

Adding lemon juice at the end gives a tangy taste to the upma and also prevents it from getting sticky.

You can also add some grated coconut on top of the upma for added flavor and texture.

Enjoy your delicious and healthy upma for breakfast or as a light meal anytime of the day!
