Modak is a traditional Indian sweet that is primarily made during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. It is a sweet dumpling that is filled with coconut and jaggery stuffing. In this article, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to make modak at home.
Ingredients:
For the Modak Cover:
1 cup rice flour
1 1/2 cups water
1 tsp oil
1/2 tsp salt
For the Filling:
1 cup grated coconut
1/2 cup jaggery
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
1/4 cup water
1 tsp ghee
Instructions:
In a saucepan, add 1/4 cup water and 1/2 cup jaggery. Heat it over low flame and stir it continuously until the jaggery dissolves completely.
Once the jaggery has dissolved, add 1 cup grated coconut and 1 tsp ghee to the saucepan. Mix it well and cook it on low flame for 5-6 minutes.
Add 1/2 tsp cardamom powder to the mixture and mix it well. Turn off the flame and let the mixture cool down.
In a separate saucepan, add 1 1/2 cups water, 1 tsp oil and 1/2 tsp salt. Heat it over medium flame and let it come to a boil.
Once the water comes to a boil, reduce the flame to low and add 1 cup rice flour to the saucepan. Mix it well and cook it for 2-3 minutes.
Now you have to turn off the gas and cover that vessel with a lid.Let it rest for 5-7 minutes.
After 5-7 minutes, remove the lid and transfer the dough to a plate. Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes until it becomes smooth.
Divide the dough into small lemon-sized balls. Roll each ball into a circle of around 3-4 inches in diameter.
Take one circle of the dough and place 1 tbsp of the filling in the center of the circle.
Fold the circle in such a way that the edges meet and form a peak at the top. Pinch the edges together to seal the modak.
Repeat the above step for all the balls and make modaks out of them.
In a steamer, add enough water and bring it to a boil. Once the water starts boiling, place the modaks in the steamer and steam them for 10-12 minutes.
After 10-12 minutes, turn off the flame and let the modaks cool down for a few minutes.
Remove the modaks from the steamer and serve them hot.
Your modaks are now ready to be served. You can store them in an airtight container and consume them within 2-3 days. Modak is a delicious sweet that is loved by people of all ages. You can make it for any festival or occasion and it is sure to be a hit among your guests.
