dal fry recipe-How did you make this

Dal fry is a popular Indian dish made from lentils and spices. It is a simple yet delicious recipe that can be served with rice or Indian breads like naan or roti. In this recipe, we will be using yellow lentils, also known as toor dal, but you can use any type of lentils you prefer.

Ingredients:

1 cup toor dal (yellow lentils)

3 cups water

1 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp salt

2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter) or oil

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 onion, finely chopped

1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste

2 green chilies, finely chopped

2 tomatoes, finely chopped

1 tsp red chili powder

1 tsp garam masala powder

1/2 tsp cumin powder

1/2 tsp coriander powder

1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves (cilantro)

Lemon wedges for garnish

Instructions:

Wash that dal in water till the water starts coming out clear. In a pressure cooker or a large pot, add the lentils, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or simmer in a pot until the lentils are soft and mushy.

Once the lentils are cooked, use a whisk or a hand blender to mash them until smooth. Set aside.

In a large pan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them splutter.

Add the onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.

Add garlic and ginger paste and fry for a minute or till the raw smell goes away.

Add the green chilies and tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.

Add the red chili powder, garam masala powder, cumin powder, and coriander powder. Mix well and cook for a minute or until the spices are fragrant.

Add the mashed lentils to the pan and mix well. Add more water if needed to adjust the consistency.

Cook the dal for 5-10 minutes or until it comes to a boil. Add the chopped coriander leaves and mix well.

If you want, serve hot with rice or Indian bread like naan or roti.  Garnish with lemon wedges.

Tips:

You can adjust the amount of chili powder and green chilies according to your taste.

If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can cook the lentils in a pot until they are soft and mushy.

You can use butter instead of ghee for a slightly different flavor.

You can also add cream or yogurt to the dal to make it creamier.
